Vermelles British Cemetery, France

On 12th September, 1915, 2nd Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 22 Brigade, 7th Division left their billets at Fouquereuil, near Bethune, and moved into the front line close to Vermelles in northern France. As was often the case when a relief took place , the enemy put down a strong artillery barrage on the trenches and 2nd Queens, suffered a number of casualties. This ‘welcoming’ shelling continued on the following morning, 13th September, 1915 and six men were killed with another nine wounded.
